It’s clear that water and wastewater companies want disinfection and oxidation equipment that’s robust, serviceable, able to get up and running quickly, and provides access to knowledgeable technicians in a timely manner. Over the years, De Nora has provided all of that—and the peace of mind that comes from a track record of product reliability and excellent service. We continue to provide a variety of services to our hypochlorite generators with quality, capable technicians. What we didn’t have until recently; however, was an upgrade program to retrofit our older equipment with newer technology. The EPA’s recommended bromate, chlorate, and perchlorate limits, while not a regulation currently, coupled with increasing operating expenses driven by the high cost of salt, have caused many of us in the industry to wake up and take a programmatic look at addressing this burgeoning need. That’s why we created a new retrofit program to upgrade De Nora systems. This program called ClorTec Gen III is specifically designed for those systems that handle volumes of 450lbs/day or more and are over five years old, basically a generation prior to the most current technology.

Consider our ClorTec Gen III program to see how it may apply to your facility. As with any service program, our technicians will first conduct an on-site survey to understand the condition, age, capacity, and any issues with your current equipment. Then we’ll recommend one of several upgrade kits to make your system compliant with the current Gen III technology. Our scope of work may include some combination of the following equipment: Gen III Hypo Generator Rack (with or without cells), replacement of acrylic cells with PVC/FRP cells, upgrading or replacing your control panel, replacing the rectifier (whether air or oil coiled), and/or adding a water chiller. In addition to a complete 20-point system service check, we will include a warranty (standard or extended) and a maintenance agreement to keep your new system up and running reliably.

Your ‘new’ ClorTec Sodium Hypochlorite Generator will provide a number of important benefits. As an example, one of our customers, the second largest provider of potable water in Cobb County Georgia, relies on two water treatment facilities to prepare water for wholesale distribution to 11 retail water suppliers, as well as industry and institutional customers. The historic use of chlorine gas became a potential concern not only in Georgia, but across the entire county. Their first installation of a ClorTec system, supplying 1500lbs/day of sodium hypochlorite, eliminated the need for bulk chemical storage and lowered its disinfection byproducts. Today, with three generators, two operating at a time, the latest high-efficiency Gen III upgrades are well received, providing 7-9 hour run times and excellent production of potable water for its satisfied customers. In addition, the new instrumentation panel with analog signals enables them to have greater flow control, better diagnostics, and peace of mind.

De Nora’s product and industry expert, Andrew Boal, has a PhD in organic chemistry, having spent the earlier part of his career at Sandia National Labs and NASA doing research in nanotechnology and looking for life on other planets before joining the water industry. So, you may be wondering why he’s uniquely qualified to advise our Oil & Gas customers on how to best treat oilfield water at various stages of the production process. Today, his scientific mind is being applied to developing novel approaches to Oil & Gas water treatment, particularly for midstream companies and produced water recycling opportunities. As Andrew would say, “Think of produced water as a valuable resource, not an operational waste product.”

De Nora’s focus for the Oil & Gas industry has always been on disinfecting freshwater used in hydraulic fracturing; however, there has recently been increasing demand for midstream water management, because of the scarcity—and value—of fresh water. Since this is one of the more complex areas of water treatment, De Nora relies on experts like Andrew to address these challenges. “The makeup of this water is very complicated—much more so than at a municipal water treatment plant or cooling tower.” He further explains, “With hydraulic fracturing, you get 9-10 barrels of produced water for every barrel of oil, and that produced water needs to be disposed of elsewhere.” It is estimated that in the U.S. onshore environment, up to 20 billion barrels of water are produced every year, along with hydrocarbons. This water is injected into either producing wells for enhanced oil recovery or into saltwater disposal wells. Pure volume is just one of the reasons that the demand for recycling has increased exponentially.
